On June 12, 2026, a delegation from the Liberal Democratic League of Ukraine (LDLU), led by Vice President Yevheniia Fedotova, attended a reception at the Presidential Office in Taiwan on the occasion of the 58th General Assembly of the International Federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY).
The Taiwanese government was represented during the meeting by Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim. High-ranking officials from the National Security Council and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan also took part in the event.
During her address, Vice President Hsiao emphasized the importance of uniting the democratic world in the face of global challenges. She placed a special emphasis on supporting Ukraine and the significance of our experience for the security of the entire Indo-Pacific region.
Key takeaways regarding Ukraine and countering dictatorships:
1. Hsiao Bi-khim expressed deep respect for the LDLU delegation and the Ukrainian people. She stressed that the ongoing Russian war serves as a stark reminder to the whole world about the pricelessness of freedom, which must be defended.
2. According to the Vice President, the national resilience and bravery of Ukrainians have become a powerful source of inspiration for the Taiwanese people. Ukraine's experience demonstrates how a nation can withstand a colossal authoritarian threat through asymmetric defense and societal cohesion.
3. Taiwan daily faces massive threats from the PRC — ranging from military pressure and cyberattacks to cognitive warfare. Because of this, the Taiwanese government is actively building its own comprehensive defense system (from cybersecurity to supply chain resilience), drawing specifically on Ukrainian lessons of survival during the full-scale war.
At the end of the meeting, IFLRY President Hania Knio presented the Vice President of Taiwan with an official declaration in support of the country on behalf of the global liberal youth.
This year's 58th IFLRY General Assembly is being held in Taipei as part of a partnership between the Liberal Democratic League of Ukraine and the Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan. The event is supported by the Taiwan office of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy, and the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats.
