On October 16, 2026, a working meeting between a delegation of Ukrainian non-governmental organizations and the leadership of the Japanese Democratic Party for the People (DPFP) took place in Tokyo.
The Japanese side was represented by the head of the DPFP, Yuichiro Tamaki, and the head of the International Bureau, Jesus Fukasaku. Both are members of the House of Representatives of the National Diet of Japan.
The Ukrainian side was represented by Mariia Makarovych, Head of the East Asian Office of LDLU, and Oksana Pokalchuk, Co-Executive Director of Truth Hounds. The meeting was facilitated by Andrii Nazarenko, a Japanese public figure of Ukrainian descent.
One of the key topics of discussion was Japanese support for Ukraine amid the full-scale war, particularly in the humanitarian and informational spheres. The parties discussed potential formats for cooperation aimed at deepening mutual understanding and institutional ties. Additionally, Oksana Pokalchuk raised the issue of Japan and other states of the Indo-Pacific assisting in the establishment of a Special Tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine.
The LDLU team is grateful to Mr. Tamaki and Mr. Fukasaku, as well as the entire DPFP team, for their openness and systemic support of Ukraine at the personal, party, and parliamentary levels. We believe that strengthening Japan's position as a security leader is in Ukraine's best interests.
The visit of the Ukrainian delegation to Tokyo took place as part of the cooperation between LDLU and Truth Hounds, with the support of the International Renaissance Foundation.
