On May 25, 2026, the first Ukrainian Arctic Security Conference took place in Kyiv. The event, organized by the Liberal Democratic League of Ukraine (LDLU) and Nordic Center Youth with the support of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom in Ukraine, aimed to facilitate the development of national expertise in Arctic security and strengthen dialogue between experts from the Euro-Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific.
The strategic focus of the conference was dedicated to formulating the interconnection between the Russian war in Ukraine and the security architecture of the Arctic.
As noted during the discussion, authoritarian states view the Arctic as a critical logistical and resource space, control over which provides a strategic advantage. Participants analyzed the impact of Chinese financial and infrastructural expansion in the Russian Arctic, as well as the objective necessity of countering these processes through the consolidation of democratic presence and the expansion of logistical networks of democratic like-minded nations in the region.

The working program of the event commenced with an introductory lecture by Justin Mon (USA, Advisory Board Member of the North Atlantic Policy Forum), dedicated to the conceptual understanding of the significance of Arctic security.
The subsequent panel discussion focused on the security conjuncture through the prism of the experience of Nordic countries, featuring Emma Isoherranen (Finland, President of Nordic Center Youth), Alexander Lindqvist (Sweden, President of Youth Security Europe), and Anders Peter Hansen (Denmark, former President of the Nordic Youth Council). This panel was moderated by Alex Finn (United Kingdom, Editor at KI Insights).
A separate analytical block focused on the nexus between the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific security theaters; this problematic was analyzed by Dr. Takashi Hosoda (Japan, Assistant Professor at the University of West Bohemia) and Erlend Bjørtvedt (Norway, Founder of Corisk), moderated by the President of the Liberal Democratic League of Ukraine, Arthur Kharytonov.
The final panel examined the prospects of implementing Ukrainian military experience to ensure Arctic security. Veterans of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, reconnaissance and UAV specialists Vadym Zhukovskyi and Serhii Shandruk, analyzed the possibilities of integrating advanced military technologies and aerial reconnaissance into respective security strategies. This discussion was moderated by Ihor Nalyvaiko (Creative Editor at United24 Media).
The holding of the conference laid the institutional foundation for the functioning of an expert and political network necessary for Ukraine's long-term engagement in the international Arctic discourse and the strengthening of regional resilience.
The team of the Liberal Democratic League of Ukraine will continue to facilitate the formation of national Arctic expertise, which is critical for maintaining national security and defense.
