On 20 November 2025, Oleksandra Matviichuk, Chair of the Center for Civil Liberties (Nobel Peace Prize 2022), held a working meeting with representatives of Taiwan’s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC Taiwan). Maria Makarovych, Head of the East Asia Office of the Liberal Democratic League of Ukraine (LDLU), also joined the meeting.
From the Taiwanese side, participants included: Vice Chair Chi Hui-jung (紀惠容), Commissioner Kao Yung-Cheng (高涌誠), Commissioner Tien Chiu-Chin (田秋堇), Commissioner Wang Lijen (王麗珍), and Executive Secretary Tsou Hsiao-Han (鄒筱涵).
The parties discussed the human rights situation in Ukraine amid the full-scale war, the work of Ukrainian human rights institutions, and tools for responding to violations, including countering Russian disinformation at the international level. Representatives of Taiwan’s NHRC shared their approaches to strengthening democratic mechanisms and protecting human rights in the face of threats from the People’s Republic of China.
We welcome the strengthening of relations between the human rights communities of Ukraine and Taiwan and will continue to support deepening bilateral exchanges to promote democracy and freedom.
The meeting was facilitated by the Liberal Democratic League of Ukraine as part of Oleksandra Matviichuk’s visit to Taiwan, organized by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF).
